Typewriter, 1938 Smith Premier "Chum"

£435.00 GBP

This wonderful shiny black enamel Smith Premier "Chum"  portable typewriter was made in 1938 and was first sold in 1939. It's basically a Remington No 3 model and in good working order and was made in the UK from imported parts from the US. It has the traditional vintage black coloured keys and red tab key with the letters and numbers in creme with silver chrome surrounds. The words "Smith Premier"  and "Chum Portable" are on the top and the London selling agents details on the back. This one has the slightly larger "pica" sized typeface giving you 10 letters to the inch.

There are some small marks and paint touch ups to the enamel body mainly at the top edge on the sides, but generally the typewriter is in a very nice condition for its age.

The typewriter measures 24 cm wide by 29 cm deep and 8 cm high. It comes with it's original wooden carry case which is sound and functional with some small signs of wear to the leatherette covering. The latch to close works well and we have fitted a new leather handle. It has on the inside the Smith Premier label with the original owners name and the date they purchased it being July 1939. You can keep the typewriter on its base board or take it off by unscrewing 4 screws.

We have given it a professional clean, service , adjusted and tested it as well as fitting a new top quality American made black ribbon.

Universal typewriter ribbons can be purchased from us when required. You would then wind rewind the new ribbon onto the metal spools in the typewriter. We can supply new ribbons from £7.95 including postage which includes plain black and a range of other colour options.

This is a wonderful and relatively rare "Chum" working 1930's vintage typewriter with its black enamel finish and a nice portable size. We also include a photo copy of an original Remington instruction manual.

"My Olivetti arrived a couple days ago. Got a chance to test it out and it works like a dream (you wouldn’t guess it was nearly half a century old). Thank you for including the original metal spools, it adds a great touch to the machine. Looking forward to adding another typewriter to the collection sometime soon..." - Jake
