This wonderful shiny black enamel Smith Premier " Chum " portable typewriter was made for the UK market in 1937 . It's basically a Remington No 3 model and in good working order and was made in the UK from imported parts from the US. It has the traditional vintage black coloured keys and red tab key with the letters and numbers in creme with silver chrome surrounds .The words " Smith Premier " and " Chum Portable " are in gold on the top and It has the original metal spools. This one has the slightly larger "pica" sized font giving you 10 letters to the inch. There are some small marks to the enamel paintwork mainly on some of the edges and some touchups , but generally the typewriter is in a very nice condition for its age .Please note there may be some colour reflection from the vintage wall map behind. The silver chrome work is all fully functional but has lost some of its shine in places over the years.
The typewriter measures 24 cms wide by 29 cms deep and 8 cms high . It comes with a wooden carry case which is sound and functional with some signs of wear to the leatherette covering .The latch to close and handle work well. The original handle has been lost as some stage and we have fitted a new leather handle. You can keep the typewriter on its base board or take it off by unscrewing 4 screws.
We have given it a clean ,full service , adjusted and tested it as well as fitting a new black ribbon.
Group 1 typewriter ribbons can be purchased from many online suppliers or we can supply you with new ribbons when required .You would then wind rewind the new ribbon onto the metal spools in the typewriter. We can supply new ribbons from £4.95 including postage which includes plain black , red / black and a range of Universal ribbons in other colour options. However a ribbon will last you a long time . To give you an idea , in an office environment with someone using a typewriter professionally a ribbon would have lasted them around three months.
This is a wonderful and relatively rare "Chum" working 1930's vintage typewriter with its black enamel finish and a nice portable size. We also include a photo copy of an original Remington instruction manual.
