This is a wonderful and rare World War 2 US Army portable Army Field Desk with a military issue Smith Corona series 4 Clipper typewriter in a good working order and has a nice typing action.
The Field Desk was made by the American Hardware Company in 1942 as detailed on an oval plague on the top. It has wooden internal drawers with brass pulls and a slimmer wooden file drawer above the space which contains the typewriter with it's carry case.
The front section of the Field Desk pulls down to provide a desk space and is fastened closed with folding clips at each side. There are two leather handles at each side and the Field Desk has been manufactured in the same style as a metal trunk with riveted detail to all edges. There are signs of wear to the outside and to a lesser degree on the inside. It measures 52 cm long by 37cm high by 40cm deep. The Yale lock at the top front does not now work.
The Smith Corona Clipper typewriter has the serial number 4C 1298 which means it was made for the military. It has the Smith Corona logo to the front. This model has the slightly larger sized pica type face giving you 10 letters to the inch. There are some minor marks and discolouration to the paintwork mainly on the left side of the ribbon cover and at the back.
This typewriter has been professionally cleaned, serviced, adjusted and tested. It is in full working order and is fitted with a new top quality American made ribbon so its all ready for you to start typing on.
We can supply Group Universal typewriter ribbons from £7.95 each including postage. Available in plain black, red/black and a range of other colour options. You would then rewind on the metal spools in the machine.
It comes with it's original wooden case with a covering. The typewriter locks in place for transit and it has a sound external catch and handle. The case is in a good functional condition but does have some age related signs of wear to the covering on the outside, mainly at the corners and the underneath.
The typewriter measures 30 cm x 32 cm x 12 cm. We also include a photo copy of an original instruction booklet.
